About:

The Fibonacci Hierarchy, the theme Carmen Heemels chose for her art exhibition, refers to the principle of the Fibonacci sequence and its application to natural patterns and structures. The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.).

This sequence is observed in natural patterns, such as:
Branching of trees and flowers, arrangement of leaves on stems, shapes of seashells and pinecones, structure of DNA molecules, the proportions of a body and face, etcetera.

The Fibonacci Hierarchy explores the idea that these patterns follow a hierarchical structure, with smaller units combining to form larger ones in a harmonious and efficient way.

In the context of Carmen’s visual art, the Fibonacci Hierarchy theme inspires to question about conformity, beauty, and judgment. By exploring deviations from this principle, she is highlighting the tension between natural patterns and human perceptions of beauty and harmony by image.

She also questions what it means and what the consequenses are when this pattern, this structure, is disrupted.

So, the questions she askes herself (through imagery), among others, are: what if it deviates? Is it then banished, or even killed?
Are you, as a human being, then condemned or dismissed as ugly, for example?

Do images that do meet these criteria feel more harmonious, more pleasant?
Does the Golden Ratio (Fibonacci) determine (a certain degree of) hierarchy? A hierarchy of which we are not aware?
